Why Take Elderberry Syrup?
In my post showing you how to make homemade elderberry syrup, we talked about all the benefits of elderberries.
Elderberries have been shown to possibly be effective in fighting the flu (among many other things). As stated on WebMD:
A specific elderberry juice syrup seems to relieve flu symptoms and reduce the length of time the flu lasts when taken by mouth within 48 hours of the first symptoms. Taking elderberry lozenges within 24 hours of the first symptoms also seems to reduce flu symptoms. Relief seems to occur within 2 to 4 days of treatment for most people. Taking a product that contains elderberry juice and echinacea also seems to relieve symptoms and reduce the length of time flu lasts. It seems to work similar to the prescription drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
Those are great reasons to try elderberry syrup during cold and flu season!
Elderberry Syrup Gummies
Despite the amazing benefits of elderberry syrup, my kids don’t always look forward to taking it. Unless I turn it into gummies, that is!
Whenever I have a batch of these in the refrigerator, they actually beg for them!
And, they’re a lot less messy than the syrup. These are a win/win!
Supplies Needed to Make Elderberry Gummies
You only need a few ingredients to take your elderberry syrup to the next level. Gelatin is the key ingredient!
Heat 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling.
Put 1 cup elderberry syrup in a large bowl and gradually sprinkle 1/4 cup gelatin on top. While gradually sprinkling the gelatin on the elderberry syrup, stir very gently with a fork to combine, just enough to moisten the gelatin powder.
Let the gelatin sit for a minute until it starts to gel a bit.
Add hot water to gelatin/syrup mixture and whisk together until well-mixed and gelatin has dissolved.
Pour mixture into molds (or use a small dropper to carefully drop into the molds).My kids love the little gummy bear silicone molds.
We also have a Lego one which is a favorite. If you don’t want to use a mold, you can also just put the gelatin into a glass dish and cut in squares after it firms up.
Remove gummies from molds and place in an airtight container.
Store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
We take a few of these daily (depending on the size of the mold you used, the amount will vary) if we’ve been exposed to illness.

Elderberry syrup gummies are an easy way to get kids excited about taking elderberry syrup! First make your own elderberry syrup and then turn it into gummy bears with this simple recipe!

The most potent form of elderberry is raw elderberry syrup (Dr. Mobley suggests syrup made with organic, fresh-pressed elderberries). The syrup is absorbed most quickly by the body—whereas if you take elderberry gummies, capsules, lozenges, or teas, they're less potent and/or take longer for the body to digest.
Elderberry syrups and supplements made from reputable companies can be taken daily, even multiples times daily. Elderberry products, like Sambucol Black Elderberry Syrup and Sambucol Black Elderberry Gummies, are made from elderberry fruits. That means you're taking in a highly concentrated source of fruit.
Gummies must be refrigerated and have a lifespan of approximately 2-3 weeks. We do not use any preservatives, so just like any other berry, they will eventually grow fuzz. We suggest that you freeze any gummies you do not use within 2 weeks and thaw as needed.
Elderberry appears to have few side effects when used properly for short periods of time (up to 5 days). Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take elderberry. If you have an autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, ask your doctor before taking elderberry, as it may stimulate the immune system.
Elderberry is possibly unsafe when uncooked leaves, stems, or fruit are consumed. The elderberry plant contains a chemical that produces cyanide in the leaves or other plant parts and in the unripe green fruit. This can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, or more serious side effects if consumed in large quantities.
Elderberry can generally be consumed at any time of day—in the morning, at night, or in between. Since it's a food itself, you could take Elderberry on an empty stomach if it seems to work for you. It can also be taken with food.
Administration of Elderberry is standard folk medicine for difficulties relating to kidney and urine, in addition to cold and cough symptoms caused by inflammation. It also suggested that about 500 milligrams per day of elderberry extract for about 12 weeks is safe and can help with kidney and urinary problems.
Elderberry syrup, gummies, and juice are made from processed berries, which remove the poisonous compounds to make them safe to digest. The common side effects of taking raw elderberry plant products, such as fruit, flower, leaves, bark, or root include: Stomach problems. Nausea and vomiting.

Elderberries may be beneficial for the heart, as they have been associated with positive effects on blood pressure; the anthocyanin content increases the release of nitric oxide—which helps widen the blood vessels and improves blood flow, leading to a decrease in blood pressure.
Elderberry is rich in antioxidants, which can help lower inflammation as well as cholesterol and blood pressure. “Elderberry's phytonutrients and fiber content helps to lower the amount of cholesterol circulating [in your blood] by binding to [the cholesterol] and expelling it from the body,” Best said.
The uncooked berries, leaves, bark, and roots of the elderberry plant contain the chemicals lectin and cyanide, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Cooking the berries and seeds will remove the cyanide.
It might affect the immune system, and also seems to have activity against viruses, including the flu. Elderberry is commonly used for the common cold, flu, high cholesterol, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses, with the possible exception of the flu.
The active ingredients in elderberry extract are water-soluble, so they should take effect quickly. Like many supplements, however, elderberry extract commonly has a cumulative effect that builds over the course of 1-2 weeks.
The berries and flowers of elderberry are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system. They could help tame inflammation, lessen stress, and help protect your heart, too. Some experts recommend elderberry to help prevent and ease cold and flu symptoms.
