Dancing With the Stars American Icons Night (Recap & Review) (2024)

Tonight, it’s American Icons Night on Dancing With the Stars! Each couple will be dancing two “unlearned dances” this week, and the celebrity and his or her pro dance partner who receive the lowest combined score will get sent home. There are only five couples left, and by the end of this episode of Dancing With the Stars, there will be only three. The guest judge tonight will be the director of High School Musical, Kenny Ortega.

Celebrity dancer Candace Cameron Bure and her pro dance partner, Mark Ballas, were the first couple to dance on Dancing With the Stars. They danced a Viennese Waltz to the song “If I Knew” by Bruno Mars. They danced an amazing Viennese Waltz — what a great performance to open up the show with!

Carrie Ann gave the couple an 8, and Len and Kenny gave them 9s. Bruno only gave the couple an 8, for a fairly low score of 34/40 points. The judges didn’t seem to be very impressed.

The second couple to perform on Dancing With the Stars was Charlie White and Sharna Burgess. They did way better, by comparison, and totally NAILED the Foxtrot they danced to “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra. Carrie Ann said that she had been “looking for something fantastic and you just smacked me,” while Kenny said “Bring out the champagne!”

All four judges loved their performance, and gave the couple scores of straight 10s for a total of 40/40 points, a very impressive start for them.

Paralympic snowboarding bronze medalist Amy Purdy and her pro dance partner, Derek Hough, were the third couple to perform on Dancing With the Stars. They danced the Quickstep for their first dance, to the song “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes. Amy and Derek are fan favorites, and it would be cool to see them continue on to next week.

Carrie Ann said of the dance “It took my breath away, again.”

Len Goodman said “Watching you inspires me to go do something.

All of the judges, except for Len, gave them 10s. Len gave them a 9, still a pretty good score. They earned a total of 39/40 points from the four judges.

The fourth couple on Dancing With the Stars was James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd. They danced an incredible Cha-cha-cha to “Love Never Felt So Good” by Michael Jackson. It’s a great song, one of the songs released just this year.

Bruno called the performance “A thriller of a Cha-cha-cha,” while Kenny Ortega said “It was obvious you put your heart and soul into that.”

The judges were blown away by the performances, as was the audience. James and Peta were awarded scores of straight 10s.

Then, the final couple of the evening on Dancing With the Stars to perform their first dance, Meryl Davis and Maks Chmerkovskiy, danced a Jive number to the song “Hound Dog” by the King, Elvis Presley. This was yet another outstanding performance of the evening — the couples are really giving it their all!

Kenny Ortega said, to imply how natural Charlie looked dancing, “you were ice skating tonight.”

Bruno said simply and succinctly that their performance was “impeccable.”

Carrie Ann agreed, telling Charlie “Your movements were flawless and perfect.”

The judges awarded Meryl and Maks straight 10s, for a total of 40/40 points!

The second round of dances on Dancing with the Stars began with Candace Bure and Mark Ballas dancing a Jazz dance to “Nasty” by Janet Jackson.

Carrie Ann and Bruno gave the couple 9s, and Len and Kenny gave them 10s, for a total of 38/40 points. That score combined with their first one and votes of fans makes them Safe for this week, and what’s more, these are the first 10s Candace has been awarded this season.

For Charlie White and Sharna Burgess’ second dance on Dancing With the Stars, they danced a Samba to “Mo Money Mo Problems” by The Notorious B.I.G. They did great, but the judges didn’t seem to think they did as well as they had with their first dance of the night

Kenny Ortega says he felt the dance “lacked a little funk.”

Bruno seconded that opinion, while Carrie Ann said Charlie looked a little “flat footed.”

Len Goodman also agreed, but still thinks that Charlie and Sharna have danced so well this season that they deserve to be in the finals.

Then, the third couple to perform their second dance of the evening on Dancing With the Stars were up on the dance floor — Amy Purdy and Derek Hough. They danced a Jazz dance to “Too Darn Hot” by the iconic singer, Ella Fitzgerald.

The couple’s dance was very cool — they even danced part of the number on top of tables! The judges seemed to really get into their performance.

Bruno told the couple “This was classic jazz at its best,” and Kenny Ortega told Amy’s pro dance partner “Derek, you redefine choreography for this generation.”

Carrie Ann gave Amy and Derek a 9, and the other three judges gave them 10s, for a total of 39/40 points.

The next couple to perform on Dancing With the Stars was James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd. They performed a TERRIFIC Rumba to “Islands in the Stream” by Kenny Rogers (featuring Dolly Parton).

Carrie Ann called the rumba “elegant” while Bruno commented on Maslow’s determination, calling it “amazing.”

The judges awarded them with scores of straight 9s, for a total of 36/40 points.

The final couple of the evening on Dancing With the Stars to perform their second dance is Meryl Davis and Maks. They dance a Viennese Waltz to “Just a Fool” by Christina Aguilera & Blake Shelton. They are AWESOME, dancing a waltz to this great country music song.

Carrie Ann tells them that she “was watching the room watch you. The whole room was running into you.”

Len Goodman told the couple that they “took that right on the edge,” and added that they “went for it 100%.”

Kenny Ortega agreed, saying that the couple “left nothing on the dance floor but a little bit of sweat.”

Bruno said that Meryl looked like “Elizabeth Taylor swept away in Texas.”

Dancing With the Stars draws to a close, with the celebrity eliminated this week being Olympian Charlie White. Charlie has given viewers of Dancing With the Stars some amazing performances this season, and it’s sad to see him going. Next week will mark the end of the season, and the last two show — a Performance Show on Monday, and then on Tuesday, the ultimate winner will be revealed! Who do you think it will be, America?
